More About Ballard Maple

Our Story

Our Family's love of making Maple Syrup roots back six generations.  Freddy Ballard learned the art of Maple Sugaring  from his Grandfather and Father.  The knowledge and love was passed down to the current generation with high hopes of it continuing many more.

In 1972, after many years of  backyard Sugaring in cauldrons and homemade pans, Freddy bought a commercial evaporator from Leader Evaporator to pursue his dream of making Maple Syrup into a Family Business.

In the 1970's sap from the sugar maple trees was collected in gallon milk jugs which were then emptied into 10 gallon milk cans. The cans were lugged through the woods to a truck, taken and emptied into a milk tank  near the evaporator.  The sap was then piped into the evaporator where it was boiled down into Maple Syrup.  The Sugarbush was upgraded from gallon jugs to sap lines in the 1980's.  Gravity allowed the sap to flow through the lines into the 10 gallon milk cans.

In 2008 Freddy and his grandson Trevor moved the operation to Tilly Foster Farm (Brewster,N.Y.).  Here they enjoyed giving the public educational tours, explaining the sugaring process from the tree to the bottle.

In 2010, due to Freddy's health, the operation was moved back to his home in Holmes, N.Y..  At this time Trevor took over the business and changed the business name  from Ballard and Sons to Ballard Maple.  Trevor with help from many family members (parents, wife, kids and cousins) has built Ballard Maple into the business it is today.

Sugaring season is more to Ballard Maple than just making Maple Syrup.  It is a time Family gathers, bonds, tells stories of the past and makes new memories.

From Our Family to Yours!  Ballard Maple Family hopes you enjoy our maple syrup as much as we enjoy making it.
